Supporting Children and Adults with Unique Needs Through Thoughtful Mediation
Every family is different — and for neurodiverse families, separation can bring specific emotional, communication, and sensory challenges that standard mediation does not always meet. At Digital MIAM, our neurodiverse family mediation service is designed around the needs of children and adults who are autistic, have ADHD or dyslexia, experience sensory processing differences, or have other neurodivergent profiles. By combining family mediation with child-focused, neuro-aware approaches, we make sure neurodivergent voices are not just heard, but genuinely understood.
What neurodiverse family mediation is
Neurodiverse family mediation is a tailored approach for children and adults who process the world differently. Traditional mediation can feel too rigid, fast-paced, or overwhelming for neurodivergent participants, so we adapt the process — the pace, the language, the environment, and the communication tools — to remove barriers and create a calm, inclusive space in which fair decisions can be made.
How we adapt sessions
Neuro-aware and person-centred. We prioritise emotional and sensory needs throughout — focusing on what helps each person feel safe, supported, and able to take part.
Specialist communication techniques. For those who find verbal expression difficult, we use clear, simplified language, visual aids, structured routines and agendas, and, where helpful, social stories, so everyone can engage on their own terms.
Flexible pacing and structure. Sessions can be shorter, broken into smaller steps, or spread out to reduce overwhelm and allow processing time between discussions.
Shuttle mediation options. For anyone highly sensitive to confrontation, noise, or busy environments, shuttle mediation lets the parties stay in separate, calmer sessions while the mediator moves between them.
Therapeutic and specialist support. Where appropriate, we can involve professionals experienced in neurodiverse-friendly methods, and support parents to build co-parenting plans that account for sensory triggers, transitions, school routines, and emotional regulation.
Why a neuro-aware approach matters
Neurodivergent children and adults often experience change and separation differently, and misunderstanding their behaviours or communication styles can lead to decisions that unintentionally increase anxiety or instability. A neuro-aware approach helps ensure decisions are genuinely in the child's best interests, reduces stress during transitions, helps both parents create predictable and supportive environments, and allows everyone to express themselves in ways that feel comfortable — which in turn fosters better cooperation between parents.
Is this right for your family?
You may benefit from Neurodiverse Family Mediation if:
Your child is diagnosed (or suspected) with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or sensory processing differences.
Traditional mediation approaches have felt too rigid or emotionally overwhelming.
You want a child-first process that includes therapeutic and behavioural insight.
You’re looking for a more compassionate, structured path to separation or co-parenting.
Accessible, inclusive, and online
Neurodiverse mediation forms part of our specialist mediation service (from £160 per hour per person) and begins, like all mediation, with a MIAM from £95. We believe mediation should work for every family — and we will adapt the process to make sure it works for yours.
Accessible. Inclusive. Compassionate.
At Digital MIAM, we believe mediation should work for every child. Our digital-first platform allows us to deliver specialised support with flexibility and discretion - making the process easier for both parents and children.
If a child or party involved in your situation is neurodivergent and requires additional access consideration, please contact us prior to commencing family mediation to discuss your requirements.
