The first step in family mediation is the MIAM — the Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting. It's a short, private meeting between you and a qualified family mediator, not a joint session with the other person involved. If you want to apply to a family court — for example for a child arrangements order — you'll usually need a MIAM certificate before the court will accept your application. And if you both decide to go ahead with mediation, each of you attends your own MIAM first.
