What Is Shuttle Mediation?
Shuttle mediation is a form of family mediation where people do not meet together. This page explains how shuttle mediation works, when it may be used, and whether it might be suitable for your situation
What is Shuttle Mediation?
Shuttle mediation is a form of family mediation where the two people never have to be in the same room — or even see each other. The mediator moves between you, carrying information and proposals back and forth. For many people, it makes mediation possible where a face-to-face session would not be.
What shuttle mediation is
In shuttle mediation, the mediator communicates separately with each person, sharing information and proposals rather than you speaking directly to each other. It can take place online or in person. You do not need to see or speak directly to the other person at any point.
Why it is used
Shuttle mediation may be used where communication is difficult or breaks down quickly, where there is high conflict, where one or both people feel anxious about direct contact, or where speaking separately simply helps people feel safer and more comfortable. Choosing shuttle mediation does not mean mediation has failed — it is just a different format that suits certain situations.
How it works in practice
Shuttle mediation follows the same overall process as other forms of mediation. Each person attends the scheduled mediation session but are kept in separate virtual rooms, and the mediator then speaks with each person in turn, helping to structure the discussion and explore options without any direct contact between you.
Shuttle mediation online
Shuttle mediation works particularly well online. With Digital MIAM, you and the other person can join from entirely separate locations, and the mediator moves between you virtually. Many people find this format more manageable and less stressful than being in the same building or virtual room.
What shuttle mediation is not
It is not counselling or therapy, and it is not about forcing agreement. It does not require any face-to-face discussion, and it does not remove your ability to pause or stop at any time. It is confidential in exactly the same way as any other form of mediation, and it can be used for arrangements about children, finances, or both.
Is it right for you?
Shuttle mediation is not suitable in every situation — factors such as safety, willingness to engage, and practical arrangements all matter, and suitability is discussed at the MIAM. Our online MIAMs start at £95, and shuttle mediation is available as part of our joint mediation service (from £130 per hour per person). If direct contact is your main concern, tell us at your MIAM and we will explain how shuttle mediation could work for you.
